At Mandel Veterinary Hospital we care about the quality of life for all your pets. There is no doubt that the best way to ensure a long and healthy life is following a regular course of preventative care. Our recommendations are:
Puppies & Kittens - We vaccinate for serious disease without over vaccinating and also test for and treat common parasites such as giardia, coccidia, roundworms and hookworms which can retard growth and cause serious disease in your puppy or kitten, as well as infect humans. We'll get you off to a good start on proper nutrition, which is key to a long, healthy life. This may include supplements with vitamins and minerals. Our staff is happy to discuss behavioral issues, training techniques and answer questions common to the new pet owner, including proper dental care, grooming issues and when to sterilize the pet. Your pet may genetic or hereditary traits specific to their breed and the doctors at Mandel Veterinary Hospital have the expertise to look for evidence of problems.
Dogs & Cats - The doctors at Mandel Veterinary Hospital believe in a comprehensive physical examination, during which time we update vaccines as needed (titers may be more beneficial for many animals rather than conventional vaccine boosters).Screening for parasites common to our area are also performed. For instance, whipworms (trichuris vulpis) are very common in northeastern Ohio and can cause several diseases such as scaly skin, itchy paws and intermittent loose stool or vomiting. Additional health screening for internal signs of stones or disease may be recommended on an individual basis, as well as discussing benefits of dietary supplements for older pets to correct for changes as they age.
Birds - In addition to annual physical examination, our doctors may perform fecal/oral swabs for gram stain cytology. This screens for changes in GI Flora or early signs of disease. Blood tests for internal problems common to some species (Calcium in Greys, Cholesterol in Amazons & Quakers), weight monitoring and nutritional consultation may be recommended on an individual basis.
Pocket Pets - Our doctors are all trained in performing post-purchase examinations, well visits, and treatment of ailing hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs and other small mammals. We guide you in proper diet and husbandry, cage size and bedding type.
Rabbits - A healthy rabbit requires proper nutrition and proper care for teeth. We also perform sterilization surgery, which is especially important in females (does) to prevent early death from ovarian/cervical cancer.
Reptiles - Our trained staff will counsel you on proper nutrition and husbandry related to each species, including lighting and temperature needs, supplementation, and in some cases, proper gender determination of the animal.
Other Exotics - Sugar gliders, prairie dogs, ferrets, opossums, foxes, skunks, squirrels, chickens — all have been through our doors.
